Water Works Industry Solutions, NASCAR's Kurt Busch and Western Nevada Supply Present New Training Tool to Construction High School Students
One of Washoe County, Nevada's Largest-Ever Single-School Donations
RENO, Nev., June 21 One of the West's top construction education high schools was presented a six-figure donation yesterday by a former water department employee who also happens to be one of NASCAR's top drivers.
Kurt Busch, NASCAR's 2004 Nextel Cup Champion, teamed with Water Works Industry Solutions, Western Nevada Supply and the Kurt Busch Foundation to donate grants and water works training modules valued at $130,000 to the Academy for Career Education (ACE) Charter High School. The donation was announced at a press conference at the Reno, NV-based charter school.
Water Works Industry Solutions (WWIS) produces training DVDs aimed at the water supply and wastewater industry, specifically the proper installation of underground pipes.
"Thanks to one of the largest single-school donations in the history of Washoe County, ACE Charter High School Students will have one of the most current, technologically advanced water works installation safety and training programs in the nation," said Leigh Berdrow, Administrator for ACE Charter High School.
The WWIS DVD training programs bridge the training gap for water and sewer treatment providers while tapping into a new conservation ethic, according to Nick Reviglio, President and Founder of WWIS.
"There has been a paradigm shift in educational focus in this country over the last three decades," said Shannon Diem, President of Business Development for WWIS. "As a result our trades industries are suffering from a lack of qualified workers, which as a result can increase the misuse of our precious natural resources. Highly populated areas are suffering as a result, as drought and water waste have restricted water use in many areas. If we can conserve water through the proper installation of waterworks infrastructure, we will save billions of gallons of water and millions of taxpayer dollars. This is why education of our youth in the trades is paramount to accommodate our ever growing population."
The importance of proper pipe installation is often taken for granted, but plays a crucial role in community quality of life, said Nevada State Senator Randolph Townsend, who spoke at the news conference.
"Broken mains not only mean lost water, but also lost tax dollars, nearly $100 million each year according to pipe industry studies," Townsend said. "Proper installation can turn that trend around."
Western Nevada Supply, one of the West's leading plumbing and construction supply firms, donated $25,000 of the philanthropy package to set up the classroom modules where the pipefitting program will be taught.
Prior to becoming a world-famous NASCAR Driver, Kurt Busch was an employee of the Las Vegas Valley Water District. The Kurt Busch Foundation supports the advancement of technical programs in education. ACE Charter High School was recognized as the 2006 Top Construction Futures Program by the Associated General Contractors of America for integrating high school curriculum with real-life construction experience and training.
