Water Works Industry Solutions Builds Public-Private Partnerships to Improve Pipe Installation Training and Safety
RENO, Nev., June 20
One of the largest single-school donations in Reno's history didn't happen by accident.
Water Works Industry Solutions a four-year old Nevada-based company has been committed to "education through innovation" by training the nation's water industry work force through innovative technologies. Reno's Award winning Academy for Career Education (ACE) Charter High School was the perfect place to continue that mission.
Today, the construction education high school received a $130,000 donation from WWIS, Western Nevada Supply and the Kurt Busch Foundation. NASCAR driver Kurt Busch presented the award in a special open house at the high school.
"The greatest challenges facing community water systems today are aging infrastructures and the lack of properly trained laborers who will replace retiring baby boomers who work those systems," said Shannon Diem, President of Business Development for WWIS. "ACE Charter High School is that next generation of laborers who are beginning to take over their jobs in laying new pipe lines as well as maintaining the current infrastructure is an area of concern as many communities are finding ACE Charter and Schools like ACE are crucial in cultivating the 'next generation' of properly trained laborers filling that gap in the waterworks industry."
Commitment to educating our nation's water industry workforce through innovative technologies while saving both financial and natural resources has been our paramount focus over the last two years, Diem said.
Not only has WWIS focused on up-to-date technologies but it has also recruited a knowledgeable and recognizable face to be their spokesman. 2004 NASCAR Nextel Cup Champion Kurt Busch is championing this training series. Before becoming a full time professional racecar driver, Busch worked for the Las Vegas Valley Water District as a laborer.
WWIS has been developing its comprehensive training DVD series for over four years. "The Basics" was designed by educators and waterworks industry professionals and is a series of DVD lessons created to help supplement and aid in the understanding and safety of the most common waterworks parts, how they are used in the field and their general installations.
Providing the new computer and Web-based curriculum for ACE included working with Western Nevada Supply, one of the West's top plumbing and construction product suppliers, and the Kurt Busch Foundation which is focused on the advancement of technical programs in education. ACE Charter High School was recognized as the 2006 Top Construction Futures Program by the Associated General Contractors of America for integrating high school curriculum with real-life construction experience and training.
